Brand new secondary school in the City - opening August 2021Posted on: 23/01/2019
Opening in August 2021 the Leicester Metropolitan Academy will be a new secondary school for 11 to 16 year olds with a different and unique offer that is not available in any other secondary school in Leicester currently. Students will experience hands on practical learning which prepares them for the world of work in careers ranging from construction to health and social care. Located on the former bus depot site on Abbey Park Road the school will be ideally placed offering easy access from across the city.
Learning without Limits Academy Trust, which is led by Babington Academy, has been awarded the right to set up the school for 1200 pupils. The Trust bid to set up the school recognised that employers across a range of industries are facing challenges in recruiting staff with appropriate skills, and are concerned about young people not being sufficiently prepared for the world of work. At Leicester Metropolitan Academy every student will take at least one vocational work-based qualification at key stage 4, and for those who wish they may take up to three. Every student will undertake a period of relevant work experience in year 10 and detailed careers education will begin as soon as children start the school in year 7. Some students will have work experience placements once a fortnight in key stage 4 as well as a block of work experience in year 10.
Denise Newsome, Chief Executive of Learning without Limits Academy Trust, said, ‘we know that employers are saying that there are skills gaps when they are recruiting staff and we also know that, for many students, a more practical curriculum is very appealing and plays to their strengths. We believe that, by offering courses that lead seamlessly onto higher level learning experiences, be they academic or practical, students will be well prepared to secure well-paid jobs with clear career progression built in. We are very excited about the opportunities that the curriculum will offer for routes onto university, apprenticeships and employment. Our ethos is ‘securing young people’s future’ and we firmly believe that the Leicester Metropolitan Academy will do this’.
The development process has just begun with representatives of the Trust, along with the DfE and its advisors playing a key role in what the school looks like and the facilities it offers.
The school will open for the academic year 2021-22 for year 7s only, current year 4 pupils. Information events will be held from January 2019 onwards and will be widely advertised.
