National Apprenticeship Week 2023

Dave Goulding, Director of IT & Estates

As a Trust we are responsible for the education of over 3500 students a year and encourage our students to become life-long learners.

The centralisation of our IT team has enabled us to introduce IT apprenticeships, showcasing our commitment to our vision of life-long learning and we hope to offer a career progression path within the Trust.

Charlie has recently joined us as an apprentice in ICT Support and has kindly shared his thoughts on the experience so far.

Q. Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I was interested in the IT field, but upon doing my research, I found there were many requirements to get into IT jobs. I did not possess many of these requirements at the time, therefore I looked into alternative options, and I felt that an apprenticeship suited my needs best.

Q. What have you learned so far?

I have had the opportunity to work with many different types of computers, printers, servers, display equipment, and presentation systems - each running applications that I've never seen before. This was a bit daunting at first, but soon I was able to learn how to fix and troubleshoot each one.

Q. How will it further your career?

I know that this role will give me a core understanding of what skills are needed to progress within the IT industry. I am responsible for audio-visual events at the school and people rely on me to make sure the events go smoothly. This role gives me the confidence to present myself in a business manner.

Q. What do you enjoy about your apprenticeship at LwLAT?

The part I enjoy the most at LwLAT is that I feel very welcome, my voice is heard and any support that I need is always there. I enjoy the day-to-day challenges that I face, with a real sense of reward when I find solutions to people's problems.
